Dragon Necropsy

beardiedragon Mar 27, 2004 10:03 AM

One of my female Bds just died and I have sent her to the vet for a necropsy. She was eating, acting fine and active yesterday. Other than a watery stool she seemed normal. Today I went to the cage and there was another watery stool this time it looked like it was splashed up on the back wall. she was laying by the front with poop on her back foot, she had already passed.

Any suggestions or things that need special attention? I am planning on being there when they open her up. This one is a tough one because she was one of my first breeders, but she never layed eggs. she got a fungus infection and I nursed her through it about 8 months ago.

She was a special little dragon to me and I will really miss her. Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

The symptoms sound like gastro-enteritis. Possibilities could range from: bacteria, coccidia, parasites or viral; it can also be a combination of one or more of these. Tissue & fecal samples will help pinpoint the cause. Sorry to hear about your B. dragon. Please post the results when you can.

the vet thinks it is GI related. they found no Giardia or worms and only a very small amount of coccidia. Had to look hard for it. The contents of the stomach was a black liquid with a bad oder (like bile). Kidneys were hard and the liver was pale. Sections are being sent on monday and there will also be microbiology studies done. I will post new info as I get it.
