Dumeril's babies enclosure question

stefan67 Mar 27, 2004 10:43 AM

Hi all,

I have a pair of 1 month old Dumeril's boa siblings (male/female). They are a single enclosure with an opaque divider separating the two sides. Both have hides and a substrate to burrow into and a good thermal gradient.

But I can't keep 'em apart! In the last 2 days, one or the other of them has found a way around the divider and I find them together in a hide or burrowed into the substrate next to each other.

Should I give up and remove the divider? I'd make sure to feed them separately in sweater boxes to avoid any accidents. I might be guilty of anthropomorphizing here, but it seems that they enjoy each others company...

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

If so, then I'd think there's something on that side that is more desirable than the other. You said you have a good temp gradient but how's the humidity? Are the water bowels and hides identical? Is there more light on one side of the cage than the other? Personally, I prefer to keep all my snakes separated, especially when they're new additions so I can monitor their conditions more easily. Good luck with your Dumerils!

In my experience, one of the two will stop eating until you separate them again. I would wait a while (get a few months of feedings into them) before putting them together if at all. BTW you hit the nail on the head with the anthopomorphizing; they are too young to "like" each other.
