Good news, bad news

pinatamonkey Jun 12, 2003 03:32 PM

The good news is that the baby bp I got at the FIRE show has eaten f/t fuzzies for me a couple times very quickly (even when he was blue), and he shed last night all in one piece...

Bad news...I was looking at the shed skin this morning, and I saw a couple small black bugs crawling on it ...Looked in the cage, and found one on a piece of paper towel, and saw a black dot inside one of his heat pits...

So, what do I do now? Luckily, I have been keeping him in my bedroom, away from my other snakes. What can I do to kill the buggers before they become a major problem? I don't think I can do a pest strip, I have corn snake eggs incubating in the same room.

Also, I am in south Orlando. Does anyone know if it's possible to get one of the commercial mite products locally?

Get some Provent-a-Mite. You just spray it all over the substrate in the enclosure, let it air out all day, then put the snake back in (be sure to take out the water before spraying). One treatment should take care of it for you. I've found that this works much better than the strips or any of the other "remedies" I've heard of.

Mite RX works wonders if you can find it anymore. I used it on 2 snakes that came in with mites, no problems for the snake-and dead mites that never came back. Just remember to read the directions carefully!!!
