Weight loss and breeding

Melle Mar 27, 2004 11:59 AM

Hello,
Sorry to post this a second time, but my poor little post got completely buried by all the substrate debates with no responses, lol.

Does anyone have a good rough estimate of how much weight is safe for a female leo to lose while laying eggs? How much does her tail shrink, etc. Ijust wanna make sure that my two arent losing too much between clutches (they were both about 80 grams when they were bred and I havent weighed them yet on how much they are now, they have each layed a couple clutches already.) Thanks!

Melissa, if your girls are 80 grams I'm sure they will have more than enough reserves for breeding. They can lose up to 5 grams (egg weights) just by laying a clutch. Sometimes their tails will feel a little loose if you pinch the surrounding tissues, but should regain the density after a day or two of eating and drinking. Where I become concerned, is if they lose about 10% of their original body weight. That is when they are removed from the colony, fed daily with occasional waxies, and given a pinkie a week until they have regained the fat reserves in their tail. Just my opinion.
