Crazy Skink

skinkgirl Mar 27, 2004 12:49 PM

My skink is Crazy! All he does the whole day is try to escape. He climbs up his log and clings on the top and claws at the side. Sometimes he goes rampid and runs all ove, jumping on things and such. You think hed get the point by now that he cant escape! I feel bad for him and plus he messes up everything in his terrarium. Is there anything I can do to stop this rampaging?

Please decribe what kind of skink you have, what the enclosure looks like (size, substrate, furniture ect), how long have you had it and is it wild caught?
It sounds like your skink is stressed and wants OUT of the enclosure- so if you give us more info, someone may be able to help. Enclosure may be too small, or not have the right kind of hide spots, you may need to add visual barriers...
Is it hurting itself? Any nose rub?

I have a shneider's skink. The enclosure is about25 gallons(I asked if this was an o.k. size in this forum a while a go and someone told me it was fine)I use fine grain sand as a substrate and there are 2 caves on has a flat top so my skink can bask. There are also a couple of plants, a driftwood log, bark and some rocks(and of course a water dish)If the encloseure is to small than there is not much I can do about it. I would love to get him a biger one but I am only 12 years old and I don't have $100 to spend.

have you looked at Aino's page yet?
http://www.helsinki.fi/~tuomola/schneider.html
this is lots of good information on your particular species (Schneider's) Check your temps ect.
So to me, your terrarium sounds small- if you shop around you should be able to find a 35 or even better a 45-50gal terrarium for lots less than 100$. Consider garage sales as well as asking friends or relatives if they have an unused terrarium/aquarium in the garage! Be sure to clean it well though if you don't buy a new one.
A visual barrier might help, but in a 25gal tank- your little one is likely climbing the walls because it has gone from having the wide world to run in to a small tank.
Good luck! Jess b
