What's the deal with Pinkies??

Tanzee Mar 27, 2004 01:21 PM

Hey everyone! I was just wondering if Tree Frogs will eat Pinkies. They are baby mice, right?
Can someone let me know ASAP so that I can grab some from the pet store before they are all out?
And also if anyone here knows if Fire Bellied Toads can eat them as well.
Thanks
Tanzee

In general, mice should not be fed to amphibians because they are high in Vit A, which can/will cause brittle bones. There are many other suitable foods for amphibians so that you don't have to use mice for diversity. Pinkies are far too large for FBTs.

Is it okay to feed my tree frogs a pinky as a special treat every now and then?

Colchicine Mar 27, 2004 08:38 PM

Sure, but I just don't see the real motivation for doing this. Keep it infrequent, like every other month at most.

is that people are able to say "Yea, my frog eats mice!" Seems like some people get a real high off of that, a real power trip of sorts, I suppose.

Agree with that. I know when I have told someone that mice aren't good for your frog, they just doesn't really seem to care much. It does sound cool that a frog eats mice (To me). Don't get me wrog, I would NEVER feed my frog with mice.

There is also so much wrong info on the internet, nearly every page that I've seen says you can feed mice.

You guys got me wrong. This is not some sort of power trip at all...I was just asking if I could every now and then to be sure whether this was a "NEVER" thing or "RARELY" thing. The only reason I had asked was because a few months ago I remember reading on some website about fire bellied toads eating pinkies, but I never tried any of my frogs on them. So I won't give them any now that I know it's not good for them, but I'm not on a power trip...just trying to get info...

I was mainly refering to the ones that do feed mice alot, I understood your question. Didn't mean to accuse you

Yeah, no problem. It is too bad when people feed their frogs stuff that is unhealthy for them. I definitely won't be doing it!!

snakeguy88 Mar 30, 2004 08:24 PM

voicing what I see most people do, which is sit there and brag that "Oh, well my frog can eat mice or rats!" I know this isn't the motivation behind all people feeding rodents, as some do not know any better. Sorry if it came off sounding accusatory.

Hey no problem! I understand where you guys are coming from though! Since we are on the subject of feeding tree frogs...is there anything they can eat other than crickets. I've heard of meal worms too. Are those okay? I have bark in my tank, wouldn't the worms bury down into there?-or would I have to get a dish to put the worms in.
