Question regarding feeding quail

r3ptile Mar 27, 2004 01:50 PM

I have heard that you can get your snake sick from chickens due to salmonella. BrianSmith also mentioned that there can be harmful bacteria in the feet of chickens. Does any of this apply to quail? Should I cut off the feet/claws prior to feeding? Also, is it common to mix their rodent diet with quail? Thanks in advance.

Just kidding, I couldn't resist....

I was merely speculating that chicken's feet *may* contain added bacteria due to the fact that chickens are often kept in coups where they walk in their own waste 24/7 and their feet are often caked with it. I didn't mean to imply that the actual feet themselves contain added bacteria. If you are concerned about quail simply look close at their feet and see if there is fecal residue or buildup or find out from your supplier how they are kept/housed.
