AFT SUBSTRATE

mblons Mar 27, 2004 05:00 PM

I have been keeping my juvenile AFTs on cage liner but not sure how happy they are. They are kept separately and female does not seem to be eating that well. They were same size when I got them and now male is perhaps 20% bigger. I will probably keep male's substrate the same as he seems ok but I was thinking of changing females to Zoo Med reptile bark. Has anyone used this and is it recommended? Thanks- mark

I have a male (42grms) & a female (36grms)....although my male is "striped" & the female isn't, he's much bigger than her.(they're about the same length) I think this is very common if you ask me, I wouldn't worry about that.....what I would worry about is using the bark though, but then again that's just my opinion. I use 2/3's sand & 1/3 eco-earth. That keeps the humidity where I need it & I keep their moist hide on that end & another hide on the sand end (where the heat source is). Don't know if that helps you at all. It's been working fine for me for amlmost a year now. (knock on wood)

Use bed a beast because AFT's appreciate a substrate that can absorb water since they like a slightly more humid environment.

I keep my juvie fat tail and adult fat tail on,half of there cage being potting soil(this soil is not from outside and has to fertilizers in it)and the other half is fake grass.
