unknown salamander, please help id

mrcanada21 Jun 12, 2003 04:01 PM

Hi,
I just got back from a trip to West Virginia (near the Virginia border). It rained for the one night I stayed in the mountains so I had the chance to see several species of salamanders and frogs on the wet roads at night. Here is a photo of one of the ones I couldn't ID. It was no more than 2" long, any thoughts?

Thanks for looking.
I have a couple more I need ID'd as well for my website so I'll post them on this thread.

Here's is a second species I couldn't ID. Anyone know what it might be? It was about 3" long.

Cheers

I suspect this one is a dusky mountain salamander but I'm not 100%.

Cheers

All three pics are of dusky salamanders. Not sure of which species of dusky though. The first pic looks like a northern dusky, but I don`t believe they are found that far south I don`t have my book handy so I`m unsure of the range. You can tell that those are dusky salamanders by the light colored "tear drop" that goes from the back of the eye to the corner of the mouth.
