Changing the channel- Calcium

marty_gecko Mar 27, 2004 08:18 PM

Do any of you have the problem with geckos not eating mealworms that are powdered with calcium? Do you think they should be powdered with calcium when you have a little dish with calcium in there?

Thanks for changing channels! Yes, I have had problems with mine eating dusted mealworms, and it seems like I have to throw out an awful lot of uneaten food. I think (just a theory) the mealies get smothered and stop moving as much, so the geckos lose interest in them. I keep a separate calcium dish in their enclosures, but I worry that not all of them are utilizing it. I do feed a variety, so they will eat dusted crickets. As a matter of fact, it seems like they can actually see dusted crix better than undusted ones!

Yes, I have found that to be true with crickets too. I have always thought that the calcium powder blinds the crickets for awhile allowing the geckos to eat them easier. I guess I am just trying to only stick to mealworms due to their ease of keeping. My geckos seem to be doing fine, but I'll keep an eye on them.
Thanks for the response!

I saw what Marcia wrote and I agree. In the little time I've been feeding my gecko mealworms she's never had a problem with them being dusted except if they play dead. I noticed she didn't eat one of the dusted mealworms the other night and when I looked I thought the worm was dead but after checking it out it was just too bogged down with powder to want to move much (I think) so my gecko didn't go for it. If it doesn't squirm she's not interested.

They definately need the motion to attack. I wish mealies were a little more active. With 20 geckos I like having a feeder that's easy to deal with.

The weird thing with my guys that eat mealworms (I go from mealworms to superworms), they know the shape. I drop them in there. They look at them, and eat them. Moving or not moving. And people say their not smart..
