How much is considered overfeeding a gecko?

nimmerfroh Mar 27, 2004 08:21 PM

I only ask because I recently got my adult leopard gecko and she seems to always be ready to eat every evening. Almost every care sheet suggests feeding adults every other day. I just want to get an idea of how much other people feed their adult geckos and how often.

I am currently feeding mine 5 to 6 mealworms almost every evening (probably 6 out of 7 days a week), do you guys think that's too much? Should I only offer this amount every other day or just be happy she's eating well and continue on this schedule? I do dust the mealworms in calcium powder each feeding. Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

I don't think you're feeding too much...if she's at a decent weight than you're feeding her just fine. As long as her body doesn't start getting rotund she should be good You probably ought to dust with something other than just calcium powder though. A really great dust that contains calcium and all the other vitamins and minerals they need is T-Rex Sandfire Superfoods ICB dust. It comes labeled for all different kinds of lizards...but that's just for marketing reasons...they are all the same. If you dust with it, you don't need to dust with anything else, and you don't need to have a calcium dish in the tank.

Thanks for the info, maybe I'll try that powder since it's more complete and luckily she doesn't mind the mealworms being dusted in something, as long as they move she grabs them.

My thoughts is that you really can't overfeed a gecko. I usually feed mine 10 mealworms every night. Sometimes they don't eat them all, but they should always have the opportunity. This would be especially true if you are going to breed her.
Having a gecko with a good appetite is definately not a problem!

You can never have just one gecko. Actually it is almost impossible to have two

I feel more comfortable now in feeding her as much as she wants to eat within reason of course. Thank for your quick response.

I always feed all of my geckos every night, as much as they'll eat. That's just to prevent anything happening if I'm to lazy one night to feed them, or pass out from over working myself (lol yeah right, lol) or if I must go out of town for something.

But I'd say, just feed them until they stop eating.
