Feeding a baby gecko

Mizar 21 Mar 27, 2004 09:19 PM

As i said in my earlier post, i just got my very first gecko. He's quite small but i got some nice small crix. What i'm not sure is how to give him these crix, they sure wont stay in the dish...the enclosure is full of hiding place....Maybe it will be best to feed the gecko in a separate container but how to do this with the minimum stress for the baby ?

You could try taking everything out of his tank before you feed him (anyplace the crickets could hide...). Putting him into something new could be stressful and he might not eat in it.

Humm...well that will not be easy to do without stressing him...i have a live plant in there...and some rocks...generally, do they go right at the crix or did they take their time ?

It depends on the leo...After you put food in some leos do go after it right away...some wait until no one is around. Since you just got him he probably won't eat for a few days (he might though...so still try). As far as the best way to feed him since you have the plant and stuff in there...I'm really not sure...lol you could try putting the crickets into a gladware type container with a hole cut in the top for your leo to get in (make sure to show him where to get in if you do this ); this would minimize escapees and make it easy for him to find them. Let me know if you try it and it works . Someone on here mentioned that idea a while ago but I haven't tried it.

What do you think of this...if i break the leg of the crix....so he will "move" but without the chance of going anywhere ?

All the legs or just the back legs?...if you just pull off the back legs (which is really really easy...they practically fall off...lol) they crickets will still crawl around, but not move very quickly or jump like crazy. I don't know about all of the legs...do you mean pull them off or just break them? I don't know if it would be possible to break them without taking the leg entirely off...and I don't know how much they'd move if all of their legs were gone... Maybe you should try messing around with a few of them and see what you can do to them make them not really be able to move very far but still move a lot...if that makes sense...lol Anyway...hope all those I don't knows help...lol Anyway, let me know what happens!

Well i'll try some things and let you know ( i know some crix that will have a difficult day tomorrow...lol). Right now my gecko is hiding under the big leaf of the hoya plant...in the cold part of the enclosure...if he feel too cold, i guess he will find the hot part easily ? Also when should i offer him mealies ?

I'd think he could find the warm part easily As far as mealies...do you mean when should you start feeding them to him as far as him being able to handle them? If that's what you mean then...well I'm not sure...lol I think as long as they're shorter or not much longer than his head is wide he could have them (if I'm wrong about that someone please tell me!!).

if is... if you set the worm on his eyes and it wont touch the eyes then he can handle the worm if it does look like it is bigger then the width of the eyse then he will choke on the worm and prolly start having trouble, cause my leos take on the worm whole dont chomp it in half at all they take it straight down the pipe hope this helps u christa if u were trying to say this i helped u out and went more into depth lol
hope i helped out

Actually that's a completely different way then I was saying...lol I've never heard of that way...not to say that it doesn't work. I just meant if you were to lay a mealworm across the top of the leo's head if it was shorter than the width of the leos head or just a little bit longer than its probably ok to feed.
