I'm getting a new tank tomorow (for free!) and I was planning on buying some plants to keep in the water. What kind would be okay if my turtle decided to eat them ? Is there any type to stay away from ? Also, do they help keep the water cleaner, or add to the mess ?
thanks in advance.

There is no plant that the turtle will not eat or at least destroy. Nothing will be left within a day or two, and the tank will be a mess of shredded plants. However, you will have a happy turtle, and aquatic plants are good for them.
