albino requirments??

lumo Jun 12, 2003 04:19 PM

well after visiting my local pet store(which is very good) over here in the U.K. i have fallen in love with a lil' albino baby. after asking one of the employees why they were not for sale, i was pleased to hear him say that they didnt want to sell them until they were sure they were eating well and 100% healthy.
Well as i was saying i have fallen in love with the lil stunner and i am going to go back and buy her (hopefully) as she is at a good price £45 not sure in dollars.

I was just wondering if albinos have any special requirements compared to other leos. i remember reading something about them not needing UV lights? is this right? anything else?

thanks

Lumo

Albinos are extra sensitive to light so it is best not to keep them right near a window, and a room with less light (no windows or dark curtains) is preferable. If you keep them in a glass aquarium it is good to cover three sides with paper to reduce light, and make sure you have adequate hides.

To help keep colors bright, make sure they have a warm side of 90° (instead of just 88°)

Price sounds fine.

Good luck with your new addition.

I have an albino leo myself, they do not need special requirements compared to other leos. Also, no leo needs UV light because they are nocturnal...they just need a basking light so their temps can be 82-90 during the day, and 75-80 at night.

Leos do not need a basking light, a UTH is fine. In fact I would specifically avoid a basking light for albinos, too much light bothers them and hurts their eyes. And young albinos absolutely do need to be protected from too much light, their eyes are very sensitive as they have no pigment to protect them. Older albinos still do better in lower light, but are not as sensitive as juvvies.

My albino is about a year and a half, so full grown, and she is fine with the light...se even comes out sometimes to get warmer. I have seen no problems with her. I do understand what you were saying about the juvies though, never had a juvie albino, but I'm sure they are much more sensitive.

Ive never heard of albinos being that sensetive to light, but it makes sense. If a UTH wont get it to 90, then your can use a red heat light (they cant see red). Thats good how they dont want to sell them til they're sure they're healthy, you dont hear that from petstores very often, consider yourself lucky, and good luck. L8er
