Basement flood

svinarsk Mar 27, 2004 11:01 PM

Ok so my basement flooded last night due to a lot of rain. My ig cage is in the basement (which is furnished). It is sooooo humid down here! Will this humidity hurt my ig? Since, it IS moldy type smelly basement funk Also, the humidity and heat has attracted a bunch of fruit flies and so on... I found like 5 of them flying around Miles' enclosure. This is fine right? I mean... there are all sorts of flies and stuff in the jungles... Im sure they wont hurt him right?

Get your ig out of there. they might encounter them in the jungle, but hes not in the jungle. he is at your house. he is your responcibilty. not just another iguana in the woods. So do the right thing, and put the cage in your room, or liveing room, or somewhere else.

I have no other enclosure to keep him in! I know whats best for my iguana... and taking him upstairs would definately be a good idea... I just dont know where to keep him... Why is the dampness from the basement so bad though? I hope he is alright! Also, the basement is pretty much dry now so it is over... I will take him to the vet next week just to make sure he is cool... thanks for the input

for starters the mold that will occur is bad for his respitory system as is the stale dampness that comes from the flooding. secondly the fruit flys that are circling arent all that great for him either. I have never had fruit flies in my igs cages but my vet advised to keep the cages spotless and the igs will be much better off without the annoying little bugs. PLEASE get your ig out of the dangerous environment he is in!

Well... I have been taking him out of hs enclosure as much as possible and taking him upstairs... But unfortunately, his enclosure is a closet that as been turned into a terrarium. I cant move the closet! Any ideas? thanks everyone.

Also, the basement is relatively dry now... and all of the windows in the basement are open so there is a lot of warm air circulating all over... The fruit flies disappeared because I found the cause of them... the bell beppers! So I removed his food dish since he only eats at one time of the day anyways. I have done everything I could without taking him upstairs because I dont have another enclosure... hope it all works out... Ive already scheduled a vet visit just in case.

You could take him upstairs and put him in a bathroom until you are certain the air is good enough for him to go back down there!!! And mold is still an issue mwhen things get wet and arent properly handled. His cage could even be molding since you said its a closet therefore it is on the floor and he has access to stale air when he is on the bottom of the cage. I wouldnt leave my ig in a wet basement but if you choose to do so then that is your decision.

Actually... The basement closet has a custom floor which is raised about 6 inches from the original ground just for these kinds of occasions... The air is now dry and humidity in the room is at 35%. Everything is back to normal.
