Special Lighting?

jasonmc Mar 28, 2004 02:22 AM

Do leopards need any type of special lighting? I give mine the mineral supplement with vitamin D3 but am uncertain about whether or not I should provide light?
Also what is the correct temp these guys and gals should be kept at?
Thanks
Jason Mc.

i stated this is another tread the other day, leos dont need sunlight like other reptiles, but its proven that in all reptiles, replicated sun light helps break down calcium. leos can do it fine all by them selfs but the light will still help if there in it. giving them light also helps them keep track of the breeding season.
hope this helps

Hey Nevin,
I just want to clarify what UV lighting does. It actually helps synthesize vit d3 which in turn helps the reptile utilize the calcium it has ingested for bone building and egg formation. Conversely, if you provide d3 by dietary means in the right amount(this is a range and not an exact amount). there will be no need for uvb lighting. Many breeders have been raising lizards indoors without uvb lighting for years. I'm talking about species that it was thought "need" it.

yes that is exactly what I'm saying. I have always chosen not to use artificial uv bulbs. I do think that leos use uv form the sun. I don't think leos wait until the sun is down completely to come out. They probably get uv at dusk and dawn hours.
