Anyone working or know who is with Blue Cresteds?

M n R-Reptile Mar 28, 2004 08:39 AM

I saw it years ago on the cover of a vivarium magazine and it has stuck with me since. I was curious if anyone is or know who is working with these beauties.

It's been discussed a lot here. Basically what it is when a crested that has a grey color to it is getting ready to shed, it will appear blue, especially in photos.

This photo is a good representation of what it really looks like. This is about as blue as they get.

Well, first of all, I've got a girl who I got last month and has been consistently blue/grey (more toward blue than grey) since then. And if that's not enough, on crestedgecko.com there's a section on his crested gecko page listing blue as one of the colors (I linked to it on the bottom). So, yes, not entirely true.

That gecko I posted looks the exact same color as yours and the one on CrestedGecko.com, when it's not darkened up. I think everyone has seen the picture on CrestedGecko.com...it's been there for a couple years. Your gecko and that gecko (and my gecko) all have that same slate grey base color, which is not what I call blue. Of course, I'm a Green Tree Python guy, so when I say blue, I mean blue...not a grey color that you can call blue if you look at it in the right kind of light (or in a picture that was taken using the flash on a camera).

Anyway, if you've seen the picture he's talking about, or even the one in the 2002 Reptile's Annual, you'd have a better idea of what kind of blue we're talking about. Those animals look totally different from ours. They actually appear to be truly blue, but in both cases, the owners of the animals have admitted that they were not and that the color was due to the flash on the camera or lighting.

I agree, there's blue dog and cat blue and then there's blue GTP and tree monitor and parakeet blue. Although it would be nice for someone to try and breed for the slate blue trait, they're never going to look like that photo.
(For the record, my 'blue' crested was a rusty red and dark grey today, but I think we kind of scared her. Gotta love color changing herps.)
