Before I get my gecko i have a few questions

danyell04 Mar 28, 2004 08:54 AM

I went to some pet stores yesterday and looked at some leopard geckos. The one store didn't have any in, but they can order me some. They can get me a baby or adult...but i heard horror stories about babies. theyd be 2 months, and i heard that they drop their tails alot and are harder to take care of. So I was thinking of going with adult. At the other pet store they had some and i fell in love with one of them. She is so beautiful, she is like the perfect little leo! But i wanted to get 2... and at the other pet store they have some different morphs of leos that i can order(and theyre cheaper by A LOT at this place) so i was wondering if i get one leo and then a few days later get another leo thats the same size, will they get along? because they have the one leo on hold for a few days, but the shipment at the other store doesnt come in until friday. i was also wondering if there was any difference in the nutrients in crickets and mealworms, should i feed both or is one better? thanks!!!

You can house two together but they must be both female, if they are two males they will fight. Along with that you will need a larger cage preferably a 30g but a 20gallon long will do fine. As far as feeding, I personally give crickets everynight dusted with vitamins and I place a bowl of worms in every other night with vitamins, leos need a variety so they dont get bored, I give my adults, pinkies about twice a month and waxworms when I can, not more than once a week or so, they are fatty and not real good, just a treat...

number one, id say go with a breeder, not a pet store. leos dont just drop there tail for no reasone, someone had to have picked it up by the tail, or it had to have gotten into a fight with another. number 2 if you get them from a pet store, make sure there both female, or one male and one female, u cant put 2 males togeather. if you get them from 2 diff places, dont put them togeather right away, keep them in separate enclosures for about 3-4 weeks, to make sure neather of them are sick. as for food, feed them gut loaded crickets, no matter where u get them from they will eat them(as long as there healthy). alot of ppl here feed there leos everyday, but i do it every friday. everyone else feel free to add ne thing i missed. lol

I'd recommend waiting and getting 2 from the one pet store. If you get 2 leos from separate places you need to keep them separated (and clean anything that touches either cage before touching the other one) for 2-3 months (3 months is better) to make sure that neither is carrying any diseases. I would recommend getting leos from breeders rather than petstores...but some petstores are ok...have you ever seen any animals in the store look unhealthy or noticed improper care? As has already been said, make sure you don't get two males, unless you're prepared to keep them apart their entire lives. As far as feeding, its good to give leos a varied diet, and yes, crickets actually are better nutritionally but its not a huge difference. You just have to be careful where you get your crickets from as if they are fed moldy/bad food they can make leos very ill and even kill them, and they can also carry parasites. It's not usually too common of a problem, just if you're getting crickets from somehwere nearby try to take a look at the cage the crickets are in and make sure it looks fairly clean. As far as a varied diet, you can give them quite a lot of things, crickets, mealworms, superworms, and silkworms (supposedly most healthy but also most expensive!) are good as staples and can be alternated with eachother. You can also give occasional treats (once or twice a month) of a few waxworms. Anyway, if you haven't you ought to check out a few good caresheets (you usually can't trust what petstores tell you). Here's a link to mine, and I know a lot of other people on the forum have caresheets as well... Illini Leos Caresheet It's always good to see someone new joining the hobby! I hope you have fun with the little guys...just be careful...they're addictive!!! lol
