I finally got a chance to go herpin' Saturday for the first time in close to 6 months. While it wasn't the most productive of days it was one of the most beautiful days I've seen for hiking in San Diego in years. With all the rain we had last week the plants were all green and the wild flowers were the nicest I've seen in years.

The area we were in has these tunnels which is home to quite a few unique critters. The more common ones are Utas (read ooooootas), Granite Spiny lizards and Western Fence lizards. The animals I get a kick out of is the bats. There are about 3 or 4 species of bats that can be found in the tunnels on a regular basis.

This is a Long Eared Bat with it's ears folded back.

Among some of the mentioned herps you can also find Granite Night Lizards fairly commonly in the tunnels. This one is just under 2 inches long.

Outside of the tunnels we saw mainly the above mentioned lizards with a peppering of other species. This Coastal Horned Lizard is about 2 inches long.

I love photographing these so bear with me.

...and finally, for the lizards...
