POPPING?

Nei_Kai Mar 28, 2004 12:47 PM

Ok I tried the whole popping method...and nothing came out. Now if it is a female how do I know I even did it right...what if it is a male but I didnt apply enough pressure or something...All I accomplished was the snake pooping on me...Can someone please help.

I would not recomend popping your snake ever. Take it to a vet who can probe it is safer and more accurate. I have had a snake thats back was broke because it was popped

Do you really think you are qualified to perform such a procedure? You just discovered that your snake poops and that it likes to tunnel. Slow it down a bit before you kill your new pet. How about just enjoy it for awhile, make sure it is feeding regularly and otherwise healthy. Then maybe let someone who knows what they are doing help you determing the sex.

I would also suggest that you do a little more research on snakes before handing out too much more advice. You seem to know alot about some of the other herps...great. Take it a little slower. There's plenty of time. Hope your snake is OK.

I have seen and popped snakes before...but I was doing it in front of someone with more experience...so I am sorta qualified.

Probes work better most of the time...Paul

Nei_Kai Mar 28, 2004 05:15 PM

Yeah I was never taught to probe...only popping and that was awhile ago...I shouldnt have tried but I thought I remembered how...plus I did it with two people and I didnt apply much pressure that is probally why it didnt work...I just didnt want to test it to much...

I'm glad you're not angry...That was not my intent. My point is that your posts from the past week or two READ as if you are very new, and experiencing much of this for the very first time.
If I am wrong, so be it. You have admittedly answered several questions NOT from the perspective of a person who knows about corn snakes, rather as one who has experience with OTHER herps.
In some cases, the experience will carry over. In others, it will not. I am just saying that if you are as new to corns as I STILL suspect you are...Listen and learn, but don't try to teach just yet. You could lead someone astray and cause harm. There is nothing wrong with being new. We were all new once. This forum has, at times, been criticized as a place where "newbies are giving advice to other newbies" ...We need to try to make sure that if we are offering an opinion, we state it as such.
It is actually admirable that you admitted, in a couple of posts, that you did NOT know the answer as it pertained to corns, but had experience with other herps. Anyway, good luck with your (new?) snake. Peace. Duffy

Just to let you know I am new to corns just not snakes in general (or other herps) I have had snakes since I was 9...(had to sell them for various reasons) Like you stated usually I only give advised based on other snakes experiences and other herps. I would guess corns are similiar...but I am also sure they are different, I only give advise on what I have read or experienced an I hope everyone knows this and often it is from experience form other related herps.

There are some pretty good points here. The last thing anyone wants to do is hurt a snake. Please get real comfortable with your snakes before trying to Pop them. This being said the only way to learn is to try. It took me several attempts before I got the feel for how much pressure to apply. I was scared to death the first few times I attempted it. In my opinion turning a new snake owner loose with a probe is equally scary. The best way to experiment with popping is to start with a male that you are absolutly positive is a male.
