Anyone know anything about Florida Lizards

eva Jun 12, 2003 04:52 PM

My friend found a Lizard around his pool in Melbourne, Florida. Does anyone know what kind it is? The yellow around its eyes is VERY bright in real life. Also, it moves very fast and likes to JUMP.

Hello Eva and Jeremy:
Though it may look a little different than most of the males of it's species, the animal in the picture is more than likely a very nice specimen of the Cuban Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei). Most people would identify it as a Crested Anole (Anolis cristatellus) but I have some of them and they really look very different. For one thing, the heads on the males are much larger and they are heavier bodied. Also, A. cristatellus has a ribbed sail on the tail as well. For another thing, their color patterns do not appear to be as bold.
Unless there is yet another species loose in the state I think what you have is a very exceptional specimen of a Cuban Brown Anole. I have occasionally seen other malres with the same body ornamentation though maybe not as pronounced.
I hope this info helps. Have a Great Day!!!
