How long until next clutch?

dirte188 Mar 28, 2004 02:37 PM

I have a female that just laid 10 eggs. I was wondering how long I should wait before I allow her to mate again. She looks like she wants to (on account of that she is doing the wave with her head like last time she mated)
thanks,
mike

I usually wait about 4 days before I put them back together. That way the female has enough time to start eating again and rest up. But, one way or the other, it really doesn't make a difference, if she is going to make a second clutch, chances are even if you kept her seperate from the male, she would lay again with stored sperm, so it really depends on the individual animal. I would let her mate again though if you want to make sure all the eggs are fertile. I have one female that just finished up for the season, it was her first year, she mated before the first clutch and after the first clutch, but the other 3 clutches were off of stored sperm. She didn't want to mate after the second clutch. So it is up to the girl really.
