new powersun bulb just came and its sooo strong

sila Mar 28, 2004 03:04 PM

I bought the smaller wattage 100w but it is still way to strong for the small 10 gallon tank. I am going to have to move them into the big 55g enclosure. So which is worse, no uvb until they get bigger or housing little dragons in a big enclosure with good UVB lite? The basking spot with the Powersun bulb is 106.6 with an overall temp of 80. Though Im not sure how cold it will get at night, that kinda worries me..Another important question is can they get too much uv lite? Should I use this bulb for just a few hours then switch to a regular incandesant bulb? Or will I be okay with just the powersun bulb alone as heat and light source.

Well you can either buy another UVB source for the 10 gallon and use the powersun when they get bigger ..what is the cool side of te tank with the powersun? They cant get to much UVB

the cool side is 75-78 the basking is 106.7..I think I might need to heat up the cool side a bit with a heat pad underneath..I just worry that its so big for these little guys..

the cool side is fine in that range.

I can just put them in the big enclosure for a few hours a day to bask under the UV light then put them in thier small enclosure for food and for the night until they get bigger..Would this be too much stress on them moving them back and forth like that or would they adjust to it?

How about partitioning off the tank to make it smaller and expand it as they grow.....then you've got the best of both....

Its a homemade job and the front is a sliding acrylic door..But I did this instead..I just put the whole 10 gal tank in the enclosure..First I tried putting in just the bd.s and they went crazy and I couldnt catch them because they were scared and there were too many hiding places. so Pulled out all the stuff and just set the whole tank inside and its working great..Mightbe a pain in teh butt to pull out each time Ineed to feed them or spray the tank though..But now Im finding out the whole tank is heating up to 100 with no cool side..sheesh Im having more problems ...............

Yep...I hear you....10 gallon tanks are really hard to get right.....let us know what you work out.....

Picking up a intermediate sized Rubbermaid bin? Make that the tank until a little older.

or clamped on. A swag hook and chain works and you position the light over the one end til you have the right temps. Your cooler area being that temp is fine.

We have 100 watt PowerSuns on the 10 gallon hospital tanks and it work that way.

ALso, make sure you have it in dome with a ceramic base on it.
