Dusty Playsand

khandof Mar 28, 2004 03:58 PM

I just bought a bag of playsand from Lowes and I was really dusty when I put it in the cage. The whole room was cloudy. Is all playsand dusty? Will the dusty affect my Beardie? Is there a dust free sand? If there is where can you find it?

Thanks In Advance,

Khando

I always sift my playsand outside with a large swimming pool net "it's great at catching all the little pebbles" and I store it in a rubbermaid container that way I always have plenty of presifted sand on hand. Also by doing this outside you avoid the indoor "dust cloud" and the wind outside naturally helps dispurse the dust cloud resulting in what I believe to be a significant reduction of dust in the sand.

Yes. All playsounds that i know of are dusty. From what i would think the dust wouldnt harm the dragon unless it got in his eye. It doesnt really get dusty in the cage unless the dragon is crazy and runs around a lot. Its only dusty when you sift it because you have to move it around. Just my 2cents.

actually it can cause resperatory problems. sand has to be cleaned constantly so there is always dust. Some people don't use it because of this and other drawbacks like the possability of impaction. Does that mean it's bad and should not be used? well there are still a lot of people using it, including me. there is good and bad to every substarte. Health wise, shelf liner seems to have no drawbacks that i can see. you might want to look into that.

I had shelf liner in her tank, I was tired of having to clean up her dropping everyday after she smeared them around the cage. I thought if I started using sand it would be hard for her to smear, because the sand would act as a litter. I think I might keep the sand in her tank for about a month and then got back to the shelf liner.

I use sand in my tank and i have never had a problem. It will help you with the poop problem but you should still clean it out every couple of days.

Where do you get your sand from and is it extremely dusty?
