Would this be too much stress on my chameleon if I.........

John_Smith Mar 28, 2004 04:54 PM

I have two chameleons right now that stay at my work(preschool). The set up is on a screened portch with light from outside coming in but no direct sunlight. what i was wanting to do was bring my chameleons home with me every weekend and put them in a screened enclosure outside with all the sun they want. i would take the chams home friday and bring them back on monday. i live about 3-5 minutes away from my work so it wouldn't be a long journey. would this stress them out too much,i figured this would be nice for them to have direct sunlight 2 days out of the week.

Do they get no UVB light? IF this is the case you really need to change things around - or do they have proper artificial UVB and you just want to give them some supplemental direct sunlight? I know you have posted before so I will ASSUME you have all the proper care going on...?

But I am curious about you not keeping them at home all the time. I can’t imagine that pre-schoolers are all that interested for any real length of time and leaving them on the weekends is not a good idea. What do you do about water on the weekends - or do you go by everyday.

My personal opinion (for what it is worth) is not to keep any animals that need specialized care at a school. I have a number of friends who are teachers and we discuss this often. The only one who keeps critters is keeping hissers (roaches) and brings them home on holidays.

Anyway...why not just keep them at home and give them direct sunlight everyday? If I lived on a climate where I could give Luna LIVE UVB I would.

just my 2 cents

Yes they do get uvb/uva from 4' flor bulbs. and yes the pre-schoolers are intrested in them, and we also have a after school program with the older kids from kinder-5 and they love them. they are kept in the science center with lots of other animals.iguanas, bearded dragons, albino bermese python, parekets, other birds, chameleons, chinchila, and we raise all kinds of insect feeders. and like i said, i live 3-5 minutes away from the school, i go there three times a day or more to check up on them.

But my ? is would it be too stressful to bring them home on weekends for natural sunlight?

...sounds like a cool school

How would you be transporting them? Would they remain in their cage or would you take them out and transport? Do they mind being handled in general? If they are staying in the cage and it is such a short trip I can’t imagine it would be too much of a problem.

the cage i have them in is way to big to transport, its a 8' tall 4' wide and 30" dept and its divided into fours. here is a pic of the bottom half where i keep the vield pair. male on left and female on right(i just put the plants on the right). so the cage for each one is 2'X2'6"x 4', there is a 4' flores on top thats not shown and drip with basking. i will build them small screen transport cage to and fro. sound good?

We know that chams take some time adjusting to new surroundings so the short 2 days may be too much (or too little ) for them to keep readjusting. You can try and see how they do and if their home is very similar to what they have at school it might lessen the stess. This is just my opinion and others (more experienced) may have other thoughts about this.
