New to leos

chunks_89 Mar 28, 2004 05:52 PM

Hey, i'm new to leopards and I want to get one within a month or two. I am going to do some mroe research on them. I have a 22 gallon aquarium that is about 1' by 1.75' or so. I'm pretty sure I will keep a male and female in there. I currently keep three veiled chameleons (soon to be bred), so I can't imagine it will be too hard to keep/breed leos as well. What is a good price for a female leo/male leo/pair of leos (in Canadian dollars please!!) ? Is it beneficial to have cage furniture in a leo tank? What wattage of a lamp should I be using for one or two leos (the tank is about 15 inches tall)? Will they share a basking site?

Thanks very much for your time everyone.

the leos should be seperate all the time except when breeding. They will need a hide on each side of the tank a humid hide, water bowl, calcium dish. The wattage bulb you should get is the one that heats your leo tank to 90 hot side and 80 cool side.

As far as price for a pair...its really going to depend on what you want and where you get it from...2 normal adults could cost you lower than $80 (I think that may be right Canadian....lol...but I'm really not sure...) but if you wanted more "elaborate" high demand morphs like super hypo tangerine carrottails from the Urban Gecko or something that could cost you over $2000 (that's REALLY extreme...lol). Probably the most common price for a pair of non-normal, non-superfancy adult leos in Canada would be between $250 and $450...that's of course just an estimate...and could be WAY off....lol Unless you have a way to keep two young leos apart from each other (so they don't breed when they are too young), I would recommend getting 2 adults from one breeder (so you don't have to quarantine them separately). As far as heating...most people use heat pads with thermostats (thermostats control the wattage of the pad to keep the temp constant). If you use heat lamps (like I do) you do need to have a substrate (I have rocks under the lights) that will hold heat so they can get belly heat to keep digestion normal. As far as the wattage of the bulbs...it depends on how far from the substrate it will be.

Oh right...I forgot to mention...keeping one female with a male can cause the female a GREAT deal of stress...if you want to keep the male with females permanently than you should probably get at least 3 females (2 would probably still get two stressed). You could still use the 22 gallon, you'd just have to make sure they had enough climbing and hiding spaces.

I don't mean to correct you Christina it was a good guess though :D

Usually the pet stores sell babies for $39-69 dollars (normal morphs in crappy condition) I got a normal babie for $29 which i though was bloody awesome at a "non-mainstream" petstore. Mind you I live in BC, reptiles here aren't as popular here. I've talked to one breeder and he got a tangerine, jungle albino for $150 canadian so I imagine their hatchlings will be somewhere in that price range. That's pretty designer isn't it?

So judge it from there, just make sure they're in good condition no matter where you buy them from.
Good luck

I wasn't sure...I don't live in canada...lol but actually from what you're saying it sounds like i was right about on the money...$29 normals would bring you up to about $80 and two $150 would be $300...which is right in between $250 and $400...lol good guesses if I say so myself!

That definetly was a good price on a designer! I live in Halifax, and reptiles are even less pupular around here. I bought my first veiled for a whopping 150$$$ adn i see leos going for 80-110 for normal morphs YIKES.
Your guesses on American-Canadian dollars would be right about five years ago or so, right now the Canadian dollar is almost worth .75 USD.

I already know the basic care for leos, i am just asking around abotu preferences for heating devices, lamps, etc.
Snarks, what are your preferences etc. for your leos, considering we live in more similar climates (It does tend to get colder here than in BC but more similar than many herpers here).

StinaUIUC Mar 28, 2004 09:05 PM

Well...the price is going to depend on where you go. According to Snarks' prices my estimates were right on. Maybe they're more expensive in your area because they're not popular so they're sold for more to make up the difference in demand. I dunno...lol Anyway, I used to go to canada every year (last year was the first year we haven't gone since I was about 4...and I'm 20 now...lol) for 2 weeks on vacation during the summer, so I am fairly familiar with the currency differences...although of course that changes constantly...lol I know at one point it was down to 65 cents to the dollar...I don't know if that's the lowest it got....but I remember it being there...lol

eheh enough with the math

Yah $80 is steep if its a normal morph, but hey what can you do? I use a human heat pad under the tank/container and i give them a light just so they can keep track of time. Lights come on means food time :D

Would you guys reccomend mail ordering a leo? I KNOW it will be chaeper than one from the store. There is a breeder right around the corner, about 2 mins walk who will have leos in a month, I may buy some from him.

Snarks Mar 29, 2004 10:45 AM

That would prolly be a better idea. If he/she is close by, maybe you can strike him a deal if you're buying more than one.

And if you're not looking for a fancy morph it shouldn't be that expensive.

Just get everything set up and talk to the breeder.
good luck
