new racks

draybar Mar 28, 2004 06:07 PM

I have been busy this weekend.
I built a hatchling rack and an adult rack.
The hatchling rack holds thirty six 6-quart boxes and the adult rack holds ten 28-quart boxes.
I still haven't put the back or heat tape on them but the hard part is done.
The photos aren't great but they give an idea.

I like them...what sort of bedding do you use for all of them? I dont know if you plan to do this but what would be cool is like a cabinet at the bottom for supplies...that would be hard to make though maybe.

Aspen is my substrate of choice. No dust, easy to spot clean, they love to burrow in it so it acts as another hide and it isn't very expensive. The best.
I probably could add a cabinet at the bottom of each rack but I purposefully stoped a little off the floor just so I wouldn't have to bend over too far. bad back!

The next time the shuttle lands, lets all get dressed up in ape suits and charge at the astronaughts yelling and ranting. That way they can try to figure out where they took a wrong turn.

Hey Ken,
Haven't seen you around for a while. Hope everything is OK.
My creamsicle is about to go into her pre-lay shed so hopefully she will be laying in a couple of weeks.
One of the babies is still yours for that dollar.

nice racks,i was wondering why the 28qt. rack is designed to have the lids on? are you using back or belly heat.don't forget to let us see the finished product.

I was hoping no one would catch that.
The simple reason is.......I'm a dumb a--.
I measured wrong and made the compartments 1/2 inch too tall.

I need something identical to that. How hard were those to build? I'm not that handy, but I'm thinking about trying something like that one weekend. Did you get a plan off the 'net? And how much did the supplies come to? They look really great!

Actually since I'm not much of a carpenter (steel worker)it wasn't as easy as it would seem.
On the rack for the 28-quart boxes I did my math wrong and made the compartments 1/2" large so I had to keep the lids on the boxes.
When I built the hatchling rack I did all of the sawing, drilling and actual building on the floor of my garage/basement.
A lot of getting down on my knees and up again and down again and up again...about killed my old bones...lol
I bought some saw horses Sunday. Made building the second rack a lot easier.
I used 4 sheets of wood which cost about $60.00 and I used somewhere around 160 screws so that was about another $10.00.
I am not sure what the heat tape and peg board for the back will be but all and all the cost for both will be a hell of a lot less then I could buy either rack for.
I'm not the best with a skill saw so I was a little worried about getting the sides and shelves all to match.
It was also pretty tedious measuring and marking to drill the holes in the walls and the shelves and making sure they matched.
The fun part was also after I built each one in the garage/basement, I had to take them apart, carry them to the upstairs den (reptile room) and put them back together again.
It took me about 8 1/2 or 9 hours total to build them both, take them apart and rebuild them upstairs. I guess I'm slow.
My boat is in the garage. Man, that poor thing is covered with saw dust now. Actually everything in there is covered with saw dust....lol
