Hi there:

An American toad was the first herp I ever kept. They're really awesome, aren't they? Now let me tell you my own cool American toad story. I've caught lots of them, but this was definately wierd. One night one of my many ribbon snakes escaped (I own a reptie zoo) and I went looking for him. First you need to understand the type of area in which I live. I live directly next to a very buisy street, in front of another busy street lined with rows and roads of houses, in the middle of a city. It was a hot dry summer. My mom had just watered the garden, and told me that she saw something move in the bushes. Obviously, I thought it was the escaped snake. I grabbed it, and it turned out to be an absolutely enormous American toad, about 7 inches in length. I kept him for awhile, then let him go. How odd is that!?

I would like to see pics. I believe 7 inches is a bit of a stretch. Even 7 inch bullfrogs are ENORMOUS. Peterson's lists the max size as usually under 4.5 inches, with 4 and 3/8 being a pretty big Bufo americanus. Depending on your area, it was probably an introduce cane toad.

alright about that size thing. my friend and i were treking near a stream and by a particularly deep part we spotter the mother of all frogs. this this was on steroides. i dont know what type it was but i was easily a foot long. he lost grip of it and i receded into a cave like thing in the creek bank. i am totally serious about this and would like to know what type of frog it could have been. this was in northern va in a creek that leads to the potomac river. leave a reply on any info.

My only guess would be bullfrog as far as native US species go. As for being a foot long, I know I have often caught bullfrogs and grossly overestimated their size with the rush of adrenaline you experience in making the catch. I am not doubting that the frog was huge, just how huge. But I have heard stories of some huge bullfrogs, so who knows, huh?

Here's a pic of a really big female bullfrog that I... well, my boyfriend, caught. We were in a swampy area of an Indian reservation in Ontario. This thing had to be about 6 inches stv.
I don't think an American toad could get to be 7 inches! The biggest I have ever found was in my garden last summer, and had to be 5 inches stv. And That was big! Anything bigger was probably an escaped-pet or introduced marine toad.

Hi there:

Now that's a big bullfrog! The largest I ever saw was in Vermont. All their animals are big because they need to survive the harsh winters. Anyway, my brother and I film documentaries up there, and we were lucky to get this on tape. While we were heading through a swamp full of turtles, and where I had just caught a beautiful red-bellied snake, I heard an enormous splash. My brother immediately started filming. A humongous bullfrog leapt from the water onto a stone jutting from the surface of the water. I was stunned. It was dark gold in color. I'd say about 10 inches in length. Of course, I tried to catch it, but it splashed far away from me. My dad couldn't believe the tape. It could have eaten a small chicken! We got the whole thing on video.

Wow!!! That frog is HUGE!! What kind is it? Where did you get it?

snakeman5124 Mar 30, 2004 07:39 PM

hey,
That is a pretty big frog you got there but.... I don;t mean to steal your thunder or anything but last summer while catching frogs and turtles under a bridge in colo i caught a real WHOPPER and another frog of similar size. I never actually measured him but his eyes were the size of those big marbles and he took up about half of the bottom of a ten gallon tank i had him in while my friend got the camera. I will try to find the piztures and post them asap.
