Our snake wont eat - help

porchiepoo Mar 28, 2004 06:59 PM

My son recently caught a gopher snake. Its about 16" long. We have had it about 3 weeks and it only ate once, when we first got it. We got a small feeder mouse for it last week. It started its twisting killing motion and then stopped for some reason and the mouse escaped. Then the snake kind of hid from the mouse. We separated them. Now today we bought another tiny mouse and they are playing together. Its all very odd. Should we be feeding it something else?

Any ideas? post here or email me please - porchiepoo@yahoo.com

Thanks!

From the info you gave in that the animal fed once and then has refused to feed, indicates there is a problem in the husbandry you are providing. Check your temps, make sure adequite water is there, be sure and provide a hide box and do not disturb the animal prior to attempting to feed. One othe rnote, if you are feeding live it is quite possible the animal was on frozen thawed and will not approach a live mouse due to the movement etc. I would suggest you check the needs listed above and then try a frozen thawed fuzzy. Additionally I would suggest you read the article here at Kingsnake.com by Melissa Kaplin on hard feeders.
