I think my toad may be sick...

InFlames420 Mar 28, 2004 08:45 PM

I had a wild Marine toad shipped to me, it arrived friday and was fairly active. I tried to feed it crickets (dead) but it wouldn't eat them. This led me to think it wanted live food. That night it got out of it's tank and hopped around my dirty floor. I washed it off with spring water and put it back in the tank. The next day it was really inactive. I went to the pet store and bought it a pinky mouse. That night I put the mouse in it's tank, and It's sunday and the toad hasn't eaten it. It'll let the mouse walk on it and sleep near it without reacting. Is there something wrong with my toad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Josh

It could be sick, but most likely its not.

Im not an expert, but usually when reptiles of any sort get shipped or bought from a pet store and put in a new enviroment they undergo a lot of stress. This usually leads them to not eating, sometimes for up to a month. Now toads can go a long time without food, so its not a big worry yet. If he hasnt eaten in a month (or if he just keeps getting worse) then you could try taking him to the vet. I've had my toads hop around my carpet on accident many times. I rinse them off, or spray them down afterwards, and they awlays come out okay. I've never owned nor kept a marine toad though.

With my water dragon, he didnt eat for a month after I got him. This was partially do to stress and partially do to parasites. Your toad could have Parasites, but if its CB I highly highly doubt it. Update us.

thanks for your reply. I didn't know they could go so long without eating. My toad is wild so how likely do you think it is that it has parasites? Also how can I tell if it does, and how can i treat it? I think my tank is also too cold(65 degrees), I bought a heater that mounts under the tank it it doesn't seem to be doing much. Today i'm going to buy a new heating lamp and some live crickets.

Its possible that its too cold... I dont really know. Check its natural habitat and find out. It doesnt seem too cold though. Give him some time, there are several ways to find out if he has parasites. The easiest way to go about this is to take a fresh fecal sample to the vet and have it tested for parasites. Or you could do it yourself with a parasite book and a microscope. If it does have parasites your vet will give your frog, or have you give your frog, medication to flush it of parasites. Before you return him to his tank after this, you must THOROUGHLY clean his tank, and anything hes touched that you want him to touch again. Otherwise he'll just get it again. Your vet may have you give him the medication again a week later or so just to make sure. Now thats for Reptiles, like lizards and stuff, im sure its similiar with toads and frogs, but im not an expert. Your best bet is to take him to the vet, i dont think your in a big hurry though. It will probably cost you 35-60 dollars though. Give him another week or 2 first.
