Burrowing BP

MightyPython Mar 28, 2004 11:22 PM

My BP has been doing a lot of burrowing the past couple of days. Is their a reason I should be concerned about this or is this normal? He's never really done this before. I know they aren't a burrowing species so that's why I bring it up. Thanks!

They don't make their own burrows, but as a terrestrial snake in westerm Africa, they most certainly make us of other burrows and tight places. In fact, to keep BP's successfully, a tight hide or burrow is usually required.

Thigmotropism.

Yeah, I have 2 hides in there that he uses all the time. But as he's been moving around in there he's been kind of "digging" through and going underneath the substrate which are aspen chips. Just wasn't sure if that's anything to be concerned about or not. He's never done this before until the past couple of days and I've had him a year now.

What substrate are you using?
Also your temps may be too cool. I'd think that the snake is probably burrowing to keep warm? or maybe it does not like its hide-spots; I have had snakes that refuse to use certain hide boxes, but will use a different one when it's placed in the cage.
