Getting into RES

rdmichel6217 Mar 29, 2004 01:38 AM

I'm thinking about buying a couple RES and was wondering a few things. Can i put the RES in with somefish? Also, are there any algae eaters I can put in there? Lastly, Getting a young RES, what should I feed it?

A few things: They eat fish, so any that you put them in with will get eaten, including algae eaters. Mine eat veggies and aquatic plants and reptomin pellets. They also eat live insects, such as crickets, mealworms, earthworms, etc. Sometimes I buy them ghost shrimp or snails also. They will eat whatever they are given, turtles are survivalists and they never know when they might be fed again, so they usually take advantage of whatever is available. This means they can get overweight easily, so you will be careful not to overfeed them.

Also, if you get a "couple", remember that they get huge, adults can be 9-12 inches long depending on sex. If you have more than one you will need a pond to keep them in.

Also please check out the many rescue organizations out there that have them up for adoption. There are so many in need of good homes it seems silly to pay for one.

Whell I have a few res now and I really love them all but you really have to have the money and time that they need and deserve. If you want a few fish in there you can get these big goldfish at most pet stores they are like 2 inches long I had one in with mine for about 2 years but then he died. You also have to remember they take out more room in the tank and make it dirty. I feed all of my turtles a combination of feeder fish (guppies for the little guy and little goldfish for the bigger ones)I also hand feed them Reptile sticks. If you hand feed them you can keep your water a little cleaner and you know that there is no wasted food.Good luck.

My algae eater (common plecostomus) leaves a lot of fecal matter.

In which state do you live? Try www.anapsid.org to see if there's a rescue near you, or visit www.petfinder.com and enter your zip code and select "reptiles" from the menu, to see if there are sliders for adoption in your area.

www.heprnutrition.com sells high quality hatchling pellets.
