Lizard Noose suggestion

Curt Mar 29, 2004 08:44 AM

Hi All,

I was wondering what you all use for the string on your lizard noose's. I typcially use fishing line, but get really annoyed when it curls up and folds over itself etc.

Anyone have a good idea for the line that keeps a nice circular shape?

Cheers,
Curt

I often used waxed dental floss...If you pinch it, the wax will aid in keeping the noose open. I know what you mean by the looping string. I think the new types of "Spider Wire" fishing line, which is braided Kevlar (I think) would also avoid this looping effect. You could probably use it to noose larger lizards, like water monitors and adult spiny tail iguanas (LOL...just kidding).

It does a great job at staying open and it is heavy enough that it doesn't blow around or get stuck. Plus, it doesn't break or wear out. One good noose can literally last for years.

Why are you kidding. We noosed several Ctenosaura acanthura is eastern Mexico with the stuff. It was strong enough that you could pull a basking Ctenosaur off a rock!

Man, I hate to get collareds off the line. I can't imagine getting a Ctenosaur out of the noose. Lose any fingers? LOL

I'll have to try that...I just have no experience with the big guys.

It has been a while since I last noosed a lizards, but the noose that worked best for me was designed like this: Fishing poll, attached to end with WIRE (about 9" long), the wire looped at the end where I then attached a fishing line noose. The wire enables you to control where you want the noose to go, even when reaching into brush. As a bonus, it does not blow in the wind.

Hey Curtis, I think I read a post that you are in the Bay Area. I will be going up there this weekend. I hope to photograph a few Bay Area species like Tantilla planiceps, Eumeces gilberti cancellosus, Diadophis punctatus amabilis, Aspidoscelis tigris munda, Thamnophis atratus atratus, Thamnophis atratus zaxanthus, Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis. If your interested in tagging along let me know, your help would be appreciated

Hey there Roadkill,

I'm always up for a herp trip. Only thing is that I was planning on flying out to Anza-Borrego State park east of San Diego this weekend. But weather's supposed to be terrible (upper 60's, low 70's) so we're talking about delaying a couple of weeks. Shoot me an email, and we'll keep in touch. I should know tonight my plans for the weekend.

My email- boarat@hotmail.com

Cheers,
Curt
