what is this and how do I take care of it?

rudedogsurfrat Mar 29, 2004 09:12 AM

I found this big guy last night when mountain biking in Coastal Southern Califorina. I've never seen a toad here in the 5 years I've lived here. He is about 5" long and I'm guessing he's a Western toad or a California toad but am not sure. I breed hognose snakes so this toad will really come in handy when it comes to scenting pinkies. I do not intend to harm it in any way shape or form.
This toad is living in a rack system right now and I would like to know what kind of humidity and substrate to use. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Rudy

its a fowlers toad and you need a good substrate that it can burrow in like moss my favorite dirt unfertlized and you also need a persay about a 4x4 inch container filled with dechlorinated water u can dechlorinate it by either letting sit for a day or two or use aquarium dechlorinator thats what i use it works good and a cave and it eats pratically anything anything that is a insect and moves like earthworm i feed mine that or whatever and you got to clean the tank every month or so and maybe you can put in live plants go to a stream near by and get some and i almost for got amphibians
LOVE moss peat or sphagun or whatever

Hope i helped brandon

If that is a fowlers toad than you have extended the known range of the toad past the Mississippi River, way past the Mississippi River. Take a look at the keys and decide between red-spotted and great plains. They are the oonly species that I know of in So Cal.
