Strange Behaviour is Leo

tuwhada Mar 29, 2004 10:02 AM

I have been reading many or your posts and although I was always told that the sand is find I can understand why it is not. So I decided to try some slate. Now my leo really does not like change, I do not know if that is normal or not. FOr example I tried to move her to a 20l and she wouldn't come out of her hide for days. So I moved her back and she was a little better. So what I did this time was I just put some slate on one side of her enclosure. I wanted to see if she would like it and see how the temps work out before I change over the whole thing. Well now I noticed that for the past few days she won't even go in her hide (which is still on the sand) and she just stays in the cooler side of her tank. When I picked her up this morning to check her and say hello she was quite cool b/c she was there. Any ideas, as anybody had problems with this before.
Also what size crickets do most people feed their leos, I have always fed her large but now I have access to multiple size I am not sure which is best for her.
Thanks
Christina

Any changes to a leo's enclosure is going to stress them somewhat, so when you changed her the first time on slate I would have recommended you just leave her and have let her do her own thing, eventually she would have got used to it. But I'm sure that putting her back into her original enclosure then changing that around again as well, added extra stress. You are right in saying sand isn't the best idea. If your that worried about her, my personal opinion is put her in the permanent housing unit YOU want her in, with a substrate other than sand and leave her for a few days. Put a dish of mealies in there and some crix and let her be. She will come around eventually.

Crix, depending on the size of your leo depends on the size of crix. Astrid my leo , he is full grown, I feed him medium or large crix depending on what is avail at the time. I prefer med simply because they don't make as much noise but depends like I said whats avail. You can also feed mealies as a staple to.

I'm sure your leo is just a little stressed and she will come around

Ok, Thanks, as long as it is normal for her to be stressed. The originally change that I had tried was quite some time ago. I just feel bad that she is only in a 10 gallon, but someobdy said that a 20 is too much for her. I do have an extra 10 gallon maybe I will just set it up and test my temps and then put her in.
Thanks for the info it was very helpful

A 20 isn't too big...some leos can get intimidated in large tanks...but I doubt that's a regular occurance. It's not like they're confined to 10 gallon tanks in the wild...lol However she's also not too confined in a 10 gallon...leos can live thier whole lives just fine and dandy in a 10
