California toads and scenting

rudedogsurfrat Mar 29, 2004 10:11 AM

I was mountaing biking yesterday and found this toad. It is huge about 5". Since it is Southern California I'm guessing it is a western or california toad. Do you think this toad is ok for scenting pinkies??

It looks like a western toad to me, but I can't be sure. Regardless of the exact species, it is definatlly a toad from the Bufo genus. It should be completely safe for scenting.

Cool to see a different species of toad for a change. I have never encountered anything here in the Houston area other then the standard Gulf Coast Toad. They make great eastern hognose food, of course, but new species are interesting. Just out of curiousity, are these toads widespread where you live?

I too am from Houston. I moved to Southern California about 5 years ago. Toads are everywhere in Houston, almost a menace. I've never seen a toad wild in California. Last summer while off roading in some mountains I came across a puddle with alot of tadpoles in it. I took one home and it became a toad in about a week! The toad was a spadefoot and they are known to grow fast because the puddles dissapear quickly.
This toad that is in the picture was hopping across a dirt trail. Since living in Houston I know that hop all too well. I jumped off and grabbed him. Huge toad. Way bigger than anything in Houston. He works well for scenting.
