The Mighty Apalachicola King ....

Keith Hillson Mar 29, 2004 10:29 AM

In building the Apalachicola page for my site I really started to realize just how diverse these snakes are. One thing Ive always been seeking are AK's (acronym for Apalachicola King lol)that have a white ground color instead of the common tan . I have pair from Reptile Artistry that look like they will be either a white or cream but I want some unrelated ones to mix them with them. Anybody know of anyone breeding white or light cream colored AK's ? Check out my AK Page to see what I mean by how diverse these Kings are.

And perhaps it already exists? is a sort of overview of what kinds of kings there are geographically speaking.... I see brooks kings that look like your normal floridana (are they?) eastern, eastern chain, outerbanks, appalachicola, goini.... URGHLE! I would love to see a resource that truly encompassed ALL the kings, with a map of species habitat would be even nicer, overlapping areas highlighted, integrades (natural or unnatural) from the kings with overlapping regions, etc. AT the moment I have such a variety of kingsnakes, but they all get so confusing in my head:

I have:
0.1 Appalachicola King
1.0 Goini (appalachicola/eastern integrade)
0.1 offspring of the above pair
2.1 outer banks kings
3.2 florida kings (arriving tomorrow!)
0.0.1 splendida (would love to see some regional variations on these to try to pinpoint where mine might have come from)
2.4 cal kings (all "designer"
0.1 Pyro Pyro

I have to say that I really love kingsnakes best. Have lots of other kinds of snakes... but they just don't do it for me like the kings do.

I should've never changed my handle from "goini!" That tells you how much I liked them. They have always fascinated me, and when I lived in Tallahasse all that time I really fell for them. You're correct and your pics show it, and it's a cool update Keith.

I'll try and get some good pics of my three AK - you can see howdifferent each one is!

I'm likely moving back to Tallahassee soon and will start looking in places I could never work really hard and places I've never shared with anyone regarding Easterns and AK. You have to hike to many spots because vehicles are impossible to get there, and by boat as well...ahhhh, back in the land of killer, diverse kings! I'm a north Florida boy and it's time for me to return home after 18 months in my current position - can't take away 25 years of Florida from the man wherever he may be living!

I didn't take the time when I was in Tally before because I do so much field botany as my job - if I jumped on every snake I saw I would've been fired for not getting a project done! And I was nearly fired for chasing down a big 'ole Eastern D'back - my boss didn't share my love of our ophidian friends!

This time around it'll be different, and I can tell you now Keith you will have plenty of photos from me...hope you have plenty of space on your site! There are some really secret spots in GA north of Tallahassee that you have to have permission to access, and I always wanted to herp them...hopefully the folks are still willing.

Peace.

-John
