Got my first orchids....

justin m Mar 29, 2004 01:06 PM

and they are beautiful. The botanical gardens in Ft. Wayne, IN had a great orchid exhibit and selling show. I picked up my first two, a Wildcat 'Carmela' and a Den Lime Forest x cruentum. Do these names sound right? I didn't really get them to put in a dart enclosure but if anyone knows if these would do well, I just may. Does anyone know of any orchid forums or helpful search sites so I can keep these looking as good as they do now. I will post pictures as soon as I can.

www.aos.org is the American Orchid Society website, and has some good culture sheets. I can't comment on the propriety of the names you gave, but at least one is a Dendrobium orchid. I have a D. 'Emma White' that has done very well in my 60 gallon terrarium, and is currently in bloom.

Most will tell you that high humidity and no air movement is death on orchids. That is true, for some species, but I'm finding that others can thrive in that environment. Terrarium culture of orchids is something that not many have documented experience with, so I just buy orchids that I am willing to experiment with and throw them in! So far I only have one that really looks as if it is resenting my care. Others are blooming or in spike!

I hope that helped, but I am by no means an expert.

My own problem with attempting orchids in a dart vivarium is not being able to provide enough light for blooming. Also, many orchids are "heavy" feeders, and of course we don't want to add chemical fertilizers to a frog vivarium situation to goose them along. Other than the "Jewel" orchid, which is a dwarf, those I've tried quickly become too large for the tanks. After a first enthusiastic bloom, they never seem to do it again for me.

That's a really good point, Patty. I have very high lights in my terrarium. Dendrobiums will like higher light. I haven't had a problem with the fertilizer . . . apparently there is enough frog poo in there for them. My dendrobium is giving off its second flush of blooms right now. I'll have to take a pic and post it here. Maybe orchids aren't as heavy feeding as some would have us believe (most are epiphytes, after all), or maybe I have just gotten lucky twice in a row. Who knows.
