Getting them feeding again after breeding

Richard-Harper Mar 29, 2004 03:01 PM

I have been breeding boas for years but seem to have the same problem every year. After my males have finished breeding they seem to take ages to start feeding again. This year one male bred for so long I had to take him away from a female because he lost to much weight, he didn't start eating for over 2 months after. Is there anyway I can get them started faster or is it just a matter of time?

I usually feed both sexes during courtship and have rarely had males not accept food....though some have given me the same treatment after breeding as you describe, but those males ate during times of courtship so it wasn't too much a dilemma when they held out afterwards. My problem has been getting my females to eat consistantly after breeding...they are so depleted from birth you'd think they'd be raring to go w/the whole eating thing. I change their substrate and clean them off...sometimes move them to different cages. I'd be open to any suggestions anybody has on the females....I rarely get a female to go 2 years consecutively because of this.

lol Its never the female's I have a problem with normally 2 weeks after breeding and they start feeding and understandably eat like there's no tomorrow. But I'll try to give the male's a wash and see if it helps. Thanks for replying
