Bathing Saharans ?

jobi Mar 29, 2004 03:49 PM

I was wondering those of you that soak your Uromastyx, do you bath them just before there lights close for the knight. It just seem logical that they who’d benefit more from this then if bathed in the morning. Photo of my first Saharan group a month after purchase, special thanks to Douglas for the valuable guidance.

Actually, the opposite is probably true - if they are still damp when the lights go out, they will be more likely to develop problems with tail rot. If you do it in the morning, they aren't as active (won't thrash and get water in the lungs), and have the whole day to get all the moisture out of the tail spikes before bed.

If you provide a rubbermaid bin with a sand/soil mix with an access tube in it, this serves as a hide box, a sleeping chamber, and gives them a space to hang out if they need slightly higher humidity. Mine don't seem to need soaked as much now that I have added the box to the enclosure.

sorry I shod have specify I always wipe them dry with a cloth, I tot that’s what every owner did after bathing there Uromastyx. This is why I tot they who’d remain well hydrated throughout the knight, I understand they are desert animals, however I was under the impression that my group was susceptible to dehydration, therefore I assumed that buy bathing them in the morning, they who’d lose much of the bath benefit from basking. I don’t think they will need bathing when set up in my larger enclosures, however as babies they seemed prone to dehydration, also I was told by someone else about the behavior you described, them trashing and inhaling water, this is why I lowered the water level as a precaution, even though they are relatively calm.
I have so many questions but will take the time and read what’s already written on this forum. Thanks for your reply on this and on my potato post, very appreciated.

What a cute bunch of babies!! That one in the middle is pretty big - must be older? Cute cute cute!!!! Mine are all young adults. I'd love to have little ones some time.

Even with a towel dry, the moisture collects between the tail spines, which is what causes the problems. That's why I try to do soaks earlier in the day. I can see what you mean about more benefit from an evening soak, but I think they get just as much benefit earlier just from having the chance to drink if they need it. Mine have been with me for many months, eat very well, and they still drink from the bath about once a month.

Just my two cents!

you could use a hair dryer. I've used it on Ra and it works very well (I use the medium setting). His tail is totally dry when I put him back in his tank.

Cute little babies you've got there.

how do u know when it's time to bathe the uro ? do they act different or look dehydrated ? (and what would that look like?)

if i have had him home for 3 weeks is it too soon to freak him out by trying this and then drying him off if he is not all that used to me handling him yet ?

thnx
