Dwarf Dragon?

perniks813 Jun 12, 2003 06:41 PM

I got a dragon about 6 months ago, and at the time he was 2 months
old. Since then i've fed him daily on greens and pellets, with the
occasional mealworms/crickets. Thing is...he's grown very, very
little. Is there such thing as a dwarf dragon? He's not a Rankins,
because i know the breeder and i have seen his brothers and sisters,
and his parents. Is there something wrong with him or what?

And yes, i do use supplements

Dwarfism can occur in any species and has been known to happen in beardies. I would first check your husbandry. Make sure you have him in the right sized cage with the proper heating/lighting/temperatures. If your husbandry checks out ok then take him to the vet and have a fecal done. Sometime a low level parasite infestation will cause stunted growth. Also, you may want to check with the breeder and see if this is "normal" growth rate for this particular line.
Separate from that, I would recommend you try feeding a larger variety of insects.

Because you use pellets, he may not grow as quickly as his siblings, but should by 1 year of age be similar in size to them. If that's not the case, then he's probably got a problem. The growth rate on pellets is slower, at least that i've noticed. However, by 1 year old, the dragons are caught up to normal.
