Mixing

Cory21 Mar 29, 2004 09:05 PM

Is it ok to mix different species of Uro's in the same tank? I'm asking because my lfs is getting in Mali's, and I wanted to get a friend for my female Rainbow Uro.

Just wondering....
Thank you,
Cory

Hi,
I currently have an adult female Indian living peacefully with 2 (male and female) younger Malis. The problem with mixing species is that different species have different diseases etc. and a WC uro is very likely to pass any diseases it has to others. If you keep the mali quarantined for a few months (at least) and get it vet checked and de-wormed and such, and then slowly introduce the two uros I can't see any problem. It would be the same problems as with introducing any new uro, of the same species or otherwise. Go slowly, put the seperate cages next to each other so they can look at each other, and then rearrange the cage that they are both to live in so that neither is territorial. Maybe give them a bath together. All the usual stuff with introducing another uro. Just make sure you have enough room for 2 uros, and don't put 2 males together, and everything should be fine if you take it safe and slow Hope this helps!

I have a adult male mali and a Aegiptius microlepis female living in the same cage. Dont go cutting my head off when i say this next thing but I even keep a beardie with my uros and have never had any problems.

no one should bite your head off for this......

as i was told a long long while ago from a book and on the beardie forum....multi species vivarium set ups are actually more advanced herpeteculture and is not that easy to do.

some people have just objected cuz they wouldn't do it.

as you said...what ever works for you.

I personally feel that they should not be mixed. Some uros have a different temperment than others that may not get along. Even some of the same species do not get along. Also uro's are perfectly happy by themselves (prefer it) so getting one just to keep them company really isn't necessary.

but whatever you decide, you will need to be able to seperate if need be and afford having seperate tanks and supplies if they would need seperated eventually.
