snake heating

i'm planning on building a large wooden cabinet set up for my snakes. i was planning on using the particle board with plasic laminated on it so that it would essentially be a plasitic enclosure etc. however my concern is with heating the seperate enclosures. i was thinking i could use the heat pads sold in most pet stores for reptiles... but i didn't know if i could put it on wood or on the inside of the cage just below the substrate; i.e. not under the glass of a normal tank. would it get too hot for a snake? i'd really like to avoid having high wattage heat lamps in each enclosure if possible. any help/ suggestions?
thanks!

If you hook the heat pads up to a thermostat or rheostat I don't really see a reason why they couldn't be in the enclosure. They run to 140 degrees without a control, though, so they wouldn't be safe by themselves. The sticky backing on the pads might also be a concern, you'd have to make very sure the animal couldn't get to it.
