Arizona Mud turtles

kl_donaldson Mar 30, 2004 01:26 AM

I have mud turtles that I was told were Sonorans. Whatever they are, this turtle is pretty common here (eastern Arizona). Both are females. Can anyone tell me how to distinguish the Sonoran from the Sonoyta? I'm inclined to think they are Sonorans, but these are the only kind I've seen and most sources don't have pictures of the Sonoyta Mud.
Thanks for the advice.

Karen we are going on a trip to see longifemorale down near Tucson in about a month. If you want to come, email me.

But when i got there the longifemorale wasn't there.

Well, this sure doesn't look like my turtles. I know the colors may be off, photos, lights and all that, but mine have darker skin with some markings on the head that show up best when they are wet. Shell color is basically the same as my younger girl, the older one is almost black she's so dark. Thank you for the update, hope you're having a fine summer!

So i have spent some of the summer getting a chance to exaimne a lot of these. I am no expert but I am starting to be able to differentiate them better. I have had alook at a few of the most intertsing collections in the state.

Did you ever get to the Mesa Southwet Museum Turtle Exhibit?

Hey Rob,
No, I've been swamped (pun, haha) Actually muddy not swampy. Is that a regular exhibit, or since I'm so late in checking posts, is it something that I missed? I get to Mesa every other weekend these days and would like to visit the museum. Haven't been there in a long time.
Mud turtles. I have a whole new- renewed interest. Did you find out if the turtles reported at SNM were indeed sonoytas? I am sure what I have here are sonorans. I have a very pretty one just now and have found a pond with others. I have been invited to remove them, but they are faster than I..... I'll keep trying. I would like to see an arizona mud as well, but I'm no collector, so the local variety is just fine.
Until recently, almost every one that I have seen was in a dry creek bed. They are there, just sitting among the rocks. Around here, people call them "those brown turtles that look like rocks". I kinda like that. Happy hunting, Karen
