SD Gophers in Redondo Bch.

byron.d Jun 12, 2003 07:37 PM

I’ve been so wrapped up with my boas ( really, no pun intended ) for the past couple of years that I haven’t posted here in ages.
I was at my son’s ball game in Redondo last weekend and happened across three S.D. gophers. Some kids found them in a field nearby and started hollering snake!! When I checked it out, sure enough, two adults and one sub adult.
The largest is just over 5’ and the smaller one right at 4’ I was really surprised to find them that large considering it’s in the middle of the city.
Every time I go to a game there now I poke around some – hoping. The worst part is that they’re developing the area very quickly, so whatever is left of a colony there will soon be gone.

At any rate, I’ll post photos soon. They’re beautiful animals. I had almost forgotten how great pits are!!

Hey that's really cool, I live in Hermosa! I've seen one in
a Malibu canyon and heard about them in PV and Madrona,
now Redondo. These guys really do spend most of their lives
cruising the tunnels and staying hidden. I have a '99 normal
male that I got from a breeder.

Thanks for the nice story, I wish i could find some Pituophis here in PA, but i'm hoping to get a few good photos of Eastern Milks and Black Rats sometime this spring/summer.
Good luck with finding a few more while at the next game.

Have a good weekend,
