Anyone know how it is snakes hiss?

Also, I'm assuming that they don't have vocal cords - is this correct?

I believe they force air through the Glottus and no they don't have vocal chords. Most reptiles don't. The only species of lizard that can truly make vocalizations are Geckos.

I can't believe I forgot glottis... 'cause I've read there's a pine snake with a specially constructed glottis to produce a very loud hiss.

All Pituophis have this little cartilaginous ridge in front of their glottis so when they exhale forceably, it is like blowing hard over the edge of an index card.
