Fake rock backgrounds

zooguy Mar 30, 2004 10:52 AM

Hey, I know that you guys here in the beardie forum make fake rock background often. I am thinking about making a fake rock background for my corn snake, just to make an interesting-looking enclosure. I am afraid that the rock will be to rough for the soft skin of my corn snake. Is there any way that you guys know of that I can make the rocks smooth rather than rough?
Thank you all in advance.

Keeping the edges a little rough would actually be beneficial to your snake. It makes it easier to shed. I always kept rough rocks in my enlosures for that purpose.

what i like to do to give a more realistic sandstone finish is use an old paintbrush to dry-brush the grout as its drying - if done properly you remove the sharper edges and ridges to leave a softer stone look - this also introduces a little colour varaation as the grout dries - really nice effect.

i just finish a new enclosure for fuego, problem is i cant get the plastic frame off the top of the 75 gal aqaurium to drop it in. i'll post a pic when i get a chance. if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate the info, i've already tried a putty knife round the inside and outside edges to cut the sealant...

Ok lol Your gonna think I'm stupid but when I first looked at that picture I thought the fake rock wall was a demented couch!I was like thats not a very good picture of the cage( I assumed the rock wall was gonna be in a cage).

To make the rough surface, people, including myself, sprinkle sand on the paint/grout/plaster/polycrylic while it is still wet. If you want a less abrasive surface simply skip this step.

When you carve up the polystyrene it looks rougher than it actually is, then when you coat it, it makes it even more smooth.

Hope this helps.

So, did you coat the polystyrene with tile grout, tile adhesive, or are they one in the same? (sorry, that might be a dumb question). Thanks to everyone who answered my post. I hope that I can make my enclosure soon.

How do you clean them. More importantly, how do you disinfect them?

I want to build custom cages for my lizards, but one of them has giardia that comes and goes occasionally, so being able to disinfect is VERY important.
