haber Mar 30, 2004 11:11 AM

hello all,

my corn is around 5 months old and was doing quite well, since his last feeding (1 week ago)he will not move from under his enclosure, i moved the enclosure a few days ago to see what was going on and his eyes were blueish grey signifying the shed, however he did not shed and when i checked again a few days later the blueish greay was gone ? what does that mean ?, he also has not moved at all from under his enclosure? i know this for a fact because there are no tracks in his bedding (sand) and im not sure what this means ? should i try and feed him ? i dont wnat the little guy to starve, or should i wait for him to become more active and then feed ? as you can see im in a real delima here, please help me if you can, andy information you can help regarding nay of these qeustion would be helpful!

thanks!

Snakes go blue and then clear up again before they shed. With mine it's usually about 5 to 7 days between blue and actually shedding. They usually hide out before they shed so everything sounds normal. You can try offering food but don't be surprised if your little guy won't eat. Some snakes go off food during shedding but some don't. If he won't eat try again the day after he sheds. Mostly likely he'll eat then. They can go a few weeks without feeding before you really need to start worrying. Keep us updated but everything sounds normal so far.

Or even paper towels. Sand is not a corn's choice bedding. Too dry, and too easy to ingest. Also 100% non-digestable if it is ingested. Also, soiled spots will grow ickies very fast.

As far as the shed goes, give him another week and you'll probably find the shed skin. With the dry substrate in there, you should probably put some type of humid hide in there also, to make the shed come off easier. If he's eaten well the last 5 months, don't worry about skipping a feeding or two due to shed.

My corns will go about 5 days after clearing up from being cloudy before they will shed. What I do is mist them and their tanks with a spray bottle and that will help them to shed easier. My jungle carpet loves to be misted. Also my ghost corn. I have a honduran milk that will not eat while in the sheding phase so I wait then feed him. It takes about 2 weeks from starting to cloud up to actual sheding. I wouldn't worry just yet. But I don't think the sand is a good substrate for corns. Maybe try aspen bedding or reptile bark.

Also what I do is handle mine before I feed them that way they are active and moving around a bit and are interested in eating. When my corns were little (they are yearlings now) they would hide alot too. Now they come out more often. Mostly at dusk.
