one quick question

jadyn992 Mar 30, 2004 11:29 AM

Suppose I live in a duplex the upstairs people have a dog and well the tenant is one of my good friends, suppose he came down one time, while my snake was out. Would the snake react to to the smell of dog on him. I know sometimes i'm full of ?'s but I'm curious and will not find out if I don't ask....thanks

What I do, is keep my dog and my burm as far apart as possible. When the snake is out the dog is locked in another room. I smell like my dog so, I am not worried about the smell but if she sees my dog I think she would try and I dont ever want to see that. Its just a risk not worth taking for the snake or the dog at least for me. It may be fine once or twice but if hungry enough I think it would go. But thats just me.

I have a pitt bull that smells like a big sweaty dog. My snakes never go into a feeding response or try to bite me after Ive been playing with my dog. what i have noticed is my snakes will smell me a lot more as if there curios what the odd smell is, but thats always as far as it goes.

Any time a burm is out of its cage, the owner should have complete control of that animal under VERY CLOSE supervision. If you have people coming into your place with dogs while your burm is out on the loose, you will be heading for disaster (one way or the other). If you are going to exercise this animal out of its cage, it should only be done in an empty room where the door can be shut/secure to prevent this type of thing happening.

His snake is not in the same room as the dogs.

Clearly, you are inquiring as to whether or not just the smell of the dog, on your friend, would evoke a defensive reaction from the snake. In my opinion not very likely, but possible. If the snake is ordinarily "touchy" or jumpy, then it has an increased chance of freaking out on any alien or unusual odors or smells. For the most part though I wouldn't say that there is too much to worry about with a residual smell, no.
