I think my spazzing gecko is going to die

kellinjar Mar 30, 2004 01:13 PM

I posted earlier about the spazzing gecko a few days ago. Since then he's been fine.. not as active as he was...but I've seen him in different spots, and I've watched them as much as time permits and I've never seen them going after one another. Today after cleaning the apartment I went to check on him and I noticed he was laying on his side beside his favourite rock. the other's weren't near him so lifted off the over head rock to get a look at him and he was moving. When he saw the rock move he flipped over and waddled off.. he still seems shaky though.

Unfortunately I can't afford to take him to a vet and I've yet to see any of the others aggressive to him even during feeding. I'm leaning towards parasite. Not sure where it would have come from, I try to keep them pretty clean but maybe it wasn't something I could prevent. I don't have the resources to set up another tank for the others either right now. I have a spare glass aquarium, but I don't have any rocks and its winter so I can't collect and sanitize any right now.. its all buried under alot of snow.

I guess maybe if he was alone he wouldn't need all those rocks and I could move some of them. I don't want to move him though.. . he seems too shaky to do so.. I don't think I could get him to sit still to move him either.

Any thoughts on this beyond a parasite? he still seems plenty fat so he wasn't losing weight..but he DOES seem smaller.. like his body shrunk all around (not just losing his belly)

Get him a fecal exam. If he is eating and still losing weight it could be parasites. It'll be cheaper if you bring some fresh poo to the vet. Fecal exams range from 6-15 bucks. Im sure you payed more than that for your gecko. Good luck.

actually I paid $10 cdn for him, and its $45 just to have the only herp vet in town talk to me. However i've been in contact with someone else and we're fairly certain that this is a calcium deficiency. Its quite possible this is the female in my bunch and she may have eggs in her now which may have caused this.
